Biografía

Training: I have been splitting my time between Adrenaline Training Center and Xtreme Couture in Ontario and will be heading to The Tap Out Training Center in Las Vegas for the last month of training. I have somewhat went back to my roots a bit for this training camp and refining my striking, since we both come from a stand up background.

When and why did you start training for fighting? I was always involved in Martial Arts all my life and I made my professional MMA debutin the TKO organization in June of 2002. Before that I was very active on the professional and amateur Kickboxing/Muay Thai circuit and in the amateur grappling circuit.

What ranks and titles have you held? I'm currently the TKO World Super-Lightweight champion and a 7 time defending champion.I'm the ISKA Canadian Super Welterweight Kickboxing champion and the IKF North American Super Welterweight champion.

Do you have any heroes? Shawn Tompkins, Jens Pulver, and Wanderlei Silva are my heroes in MMA.

What is your favorite technique? I love all the techniques I use in a fight.

What does it mean for you to fight in the WEC? A great opportunity to fight against the best 145-pounders in the world.

Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn? I completed my University degree in Business and Administration.

What was your job before you started fighting? I was a full time student.

Most memorable professional fight (who, where, why)? My most memorable fight was at UFC 58 against Yves Edwards.  It was all my dreams coming into fruition fighting in the premier organization in the world as well as fighting the number 1 fighter in the division at the time.  I was a 5 to 1 underdog and ended up submitting him the second round with a triangle choke. It was a surreal moment that I will remember for the rest of my life.

What was your most challenging professional fight (against who, when, what was the outcome)? I believe that my most challenging fight is each new time I step foot in the cage.  No matter who the opponent is, or the size and magnitude of the show I look at my opponent in front of me as the biggest test to date.

Did you compete in any other sport(s) at college or professional level (what sport, where, how long)? As a kid I played competitive hockey, like most Canadian kids, but all through high school and University I competed at a National and International level in Kickboxing and Muay Thai.

Who were your training partners for this fight? I have been working with teammates Sam Stout, Chris Horodecki, multiple time national wrestling champ Clint Kingsbury, BJJ brown belt Rowan Cunningham, Fitz Vanderpool for boxing, Brian Fletcher for S and C and of course Shawn Tompkins.

Did you put more emphasis towards a fighting style or adjust your training to prepare for your opponent (what did you do differently/why)?  I always focus on covering all elements of the game, as well as being in dog shape, but this fight I have been really focusing on ensuring my stand up is sharp as ever since that is where Yves is strongest and where I want to dominate.

What, other than WINNING, are you using for motivation for the fight? My motivation is to make a statement with this fight to all in the division.

What is your favorite thing about this sport? My favorite this about this sport is truly doing what I love every day.  MMA is my passion, and has been for the last 14 years of my life.  Training, competing and being a part of this sport is a blessing every day for me.

How long do you see yourself staying in this sport? I will be a part of this sport for the rest of my life in some way or another.  I went to University for 5 years and completed a business degree but put that aside to compete in MMA.  We just opened a MMA training facility in Canada this past year which has become a success in under a year, and we look forward to building champions for the years to come out of there.
